It is with saddness that I heard of Gary’s death last Friday. I first met him at Mawson Station in January 1970, a jovial and happy person who was looking forward to going home after a year in the Antarctic. The 1969 crew, of which Gary was the cosray physicist, was a tight knit bunch and he was oviously a popular member of the team. On returning to Hobart in 1971, I got to know Gary much better and he and Maggie hosted many fondu nights at their home in Howrah. There was always lots of laughter, plenty of wine and the odd sore head afterwards. Never short of an opinion, he loved the banter of pulling apart an arguement. Sadly, a generous soul has departed. My love and sympathies to Maggie, Sarah, Andrew and grandchildren, Nicholas and Isabel & from all the ANARE Club fraternity.

Since being notified of Gary’s passing I find myself thinking of the time we spent together at Mawson “69….My life was enriched in knowing and working with him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. May God be with you all.

Dearest Maggie, Sarah, Drew, Jacqui, Nicholas, and Isabel, our thoughts are with you for the loss of your dear Gary. We will be unable to attend in person, but will be thinking of you all on Wednesday. Gary always had the most happy and wide beaming smile, and we will always remember him like this. Love Amelia and Harley xx
